Hamid Ajami, Iranian b.1962. Born into a traditional family in Tehran, Ajami’s late father was both a poet and a calligrapher. Following on from his father, Ajami joined Iran’s Calligraphy Association in 1978 where he learnt the basic tenets and principles of academic calligraphy. He went on to teach at the Association and spent many years developing his own script, which was given the name “Mo’alla”. Alongside likeminded artists Ajami founded the “Fard-A Cultural and Art Institute” creating a space for exploration in traditional calligraphy and exhibition for the contemporary visual arts. Ajami’s work encapsulates his dedication to his craft, his technical skill and his innovations within the field. His most recent exhibition however is a striking departure from his calligraphic past and vividly explores the theme of war and its impact on the everyday.
