    • William Aikman (Scottish, 1682–1731) Portrait of Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll (1682-1761)
      Feb. 14, 2023

William Aikman (Scottish, 1682–1731) Portrait of Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll (1682-1761)

      Est: $5,000 - $8,000

William Aikman (Scottish, 1682–1731) Portrait of Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll (1682-1761) Oil on canvas 50 x 40 in. (127 x 101.6cm) Executed circa 1710-1720. Housed in a period giltwood frame. Provenance By family descent to Captain Robert Archibald James Montgomerie R.N. (1855 - 1908) of Edinburgh. To his son Captain Robert Victor Campbell Montgomerie-Charrington (1887-1939), 1st Life Guards, of Newport, Rhode Island. Thence by family descent. Private Collection, Massachusetts. Note Brother of John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll, Archibald Campbell studied civil law at Eton College and the University of Edinburgh and famously appears in Robert Louis Stevenson’s David Balfour. Less proactive on the military field that his brother, he still joined the Army in 1703 and fought under the Duke of Marlborough for a time. Following the treaty of the Union, he was elected as one of the sixteen Scottish peers to sit in the House of Lords alongside Daniel Campbell. While there are a few known versions of Aikman’s portrait of the Second Duke, the present work seems to be the only representation of his brother, the Third Duke, of whom there are relatively few surviving portraits other than two later works by Ramsay. Daniel Campbell presumably commissioned the two portraits of the Second and Third Dukes of Argyll both out of clan loyalty as Chiefs of the Campbell clan, but also to acknowledge, and honor his business relationship with them. Daniel Campbell indeed became their principal banker at the turn of the 18th century, his wealth eventually exceeding theirs considerably. It is recorded that the Second Duke originally asked Daniel Campbell’s advice as to whether he should buy the island of Islay, and when Daniel considered the advantageous proposition, outbid the Duke and bought it himself instead. Est: $5,000 - $8,000

William Aikman (Scottish, 1682–1731) Portrait of John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll (1680-1743) Pencil inscribed with the sitter's name on upper stretcher verso, oil on canvas 50 x 40 in. Note John Campbell was a Knight of the Garter and senior commander of the British Army. He served first on the continent during the Nine Years War, and fought at the Battle of Kaiserwerth during the War of the Spanish Succession. Most famously, he commanded the troops that put down the 1715 Jacobite rebellion. He died in 1743 and his body still remains in Westminster Abbey, not far from Henry VIII. • William Aikman (Scottish, 1682–1731) Portrait of Margaret Campbell, née Leckie (1674-1711), and her Eldest Son John Campbell (1696-1746)
      Feb. 14, 2023

William Aikman (Scottish, 1682–1731) Portrait of Margaret Campbell, née Leckie (1674-1711), and her Eldest Son John Campbell (1696-1746)

      Est: $5,000 - $8,000

William Aikman (Scottish, 1682–1731) Portrait of Margaret Campbell, née Leckie (1674-1711), and her Eldest Son John Campbell (1696-1746) Oil on canvas 50 x 40 in. (127 x 101.6cm) Executed circa 1710-1720. Housed in a period giltwood frame. Provenance By family descent to Captain Robert Archibald James Montgomerie R.N. (1855 - 1908) of Edinburgh. To his son Captain Robert Victor Campbell Montgomerie-Charrington, 1st Life Guards, of Newport, Rhode Island. Thence by family descent. Private Collection, Massachusetts. Note This very early work by Aikman was painted around the time the artist was first coming to the attention of Daniel Campbell, who fostered his career and eventual success in London. Aikman here presents us with Campbell's first wife, Margaret Leckie, the daughter of John Leckie of Newlands. Together, they had three sons and three daughters. When Margaret died relatively young, Daniel remarried. The portrait of Daniel Campbell featured on the cover of Joanna Hill and Nicholas Bastin's biography of Daniel Campbell (A Very Canny Scot: “Great” Daniel Campbell of Shawfield & Islay 1670-1753, Two Plus George Ltd, 2007) may have been the pendant to the present work. The couple's eldest son and Daniel's heir, John Campbell is featured by Margaret's side. John eventually married Lady Margaret Campbell, daughter of the Earl of Loudon. As they had no children and she died young, he remarried to Lady Henrietta Cunninghame, daughter of the Earl of Glencairn, with whom he had three sons: John, Daniel and Walter. • William Aikman (Scottish, 1682–1731) Portrait of Daniel Campbell of Shawfield and Islay (1671/72-1753)
      Feb. 14, 2023

William Aikman (Scottish, 1682–1731) Portrait of Daniel Campbell of Shawfield and Islay (1671/72-1753)

      Est: $5,000 - $8,000

William Aikman (Scottish, 1682–1731) Portrait of Daniel Campbell of Shawfield and Islay (1671/72-1753) Inscribed with the sitter's name on a label affixed to upper stretcher verso, oil on canvas 50 3/4 x 40 1/4 in. (128.9 x 102.2cm) Housed in a period giltwood frame. Provenance By family descent to Captain Robert Archibald James Montgomerie R.N. (1855 - 1908) of Edinburgh. To his son Captain Robert Victor Campbell Montgomerie-Charrington, 1st Life Guards, of Newport, Rhode Island. Thence by family descent. Private Collection, Massachusetts. Literature Lady Russell, Three Generations of Fascinating Women and other Sketches from Family History, Longmans, Green & Co., London, 1905, p. 175 (mentioned, and illustrated). Note Daniel Campbell, also known as "Great Dan" because of his impressive height and his considerable wealth, was a towering figure in early eighteenth centiry Scottish history. Starting as a leading merchant from Glasgow trading (sometimes illegally) with the English North American colonies and the Caribbean, Campbell later rose as one of the most prominent members of the last Scottish Parliamant, opposing the Jacobite cause. A close friend of his clan Chief the Duke of Argyll, he represented Inverary in the Scottish parliament from 1702 onwards, and was one of the several commissioners who negociated the terms of the Union treaty, before eventually sitting in the newly assembled Parliament of Great Britain between 1707 and 1708. In 1711 Campbell built Shawfield mansion, which gave its name to the infamous Shawfield riots of 1725, following Campbell malt tax which infuriated the mob who, after taking possession of the city and preventing the officers from collecting the said tax, proceeded to Campbell's mansion and ransack its interior. Campbell eventually received £9,000 from the city as compensation for the damages caused by the riot. Soon afterwards he sold Shawfield and purchased the island of Islay, where he led a series of modern agricultural changes including the introduction of commercial distillation of single malt whisky, which forever changed the face, and fate, of the island. He rebuilt Waresley Church, now in Cambridgeshire, in 1728 after it was destroyed by a storm in 1724. Jelfe's biggest contract was the building of Westminster Bridge, London, to the designs of Charles Labelye, in partnership with Samuel Tufnell, Master Mason to Westminster Abbey, a project which lasted from 1738-1747. Jelfe's most important work as an architect was probably the Court House or Town Hall at Rye in Sussex. We are grateful to Charles Hind for his assistance with the catalogue entry.
