The "trick with the light" is that Rembrandt transforms the incident light directly into colour, but this is not explicitly depicted in this version. What remains is an almost cubistically alienated face of Rembrandt, whose eyes seem to develop a life of their own in the focus of the incident light. The work is of a rarely reduced colourfulness in an impasto and free application of paint, which creates a symbiosis of Rembrandt and Aigner. Very fine framing.       Oil on canvas Signed and dated lower left 71,3 x 48,4 in White wooden strip The large-format museum work was created during the creative period of the 1970s, which was so important for Aigner's artistic development. This period produced a whole series of excellent works in which he processed the turbulent life experiences of the time in highly symbolically charged compositions. The present work is based on the painful adultery of his wife with his colleague and writer Werner Kofler, who had been a good friend until then, and from whose relationship a child was born. Aigner depicts this experience in a masterfully executed honest self-portrait against a neutral background. The life-affirming symbols such as the eggshells with the lilies springing from them stand in stark contrast to the grotesque demon-like figures from the egg. Such an honest, emotional and high-quality work has not been offered on the auction market before. Provenance: Private collection Southern Germany, acquired directly from the artist. The work was exhibited in the exhibition "Der nackte Mann" at the LENTOS Kunstmuseum Linz and is illustrated in the accompanying publication: Der nackte Mann / The naked Man, LENTOS Kunstmuseum Linz, Linz 2012, p. 37.

In the basic style of fantastic realism, he presents himself here in a seductive small format through fine painting in back view in front of a cliff on which human activity prevails. The painter-prince - as he also stages himself through the headdress - seems to be unaffected by the stormy sea; he awakens the memory of a brilliant Renaissance man. Seriously he looks at the viewer over his back, revealing his finest features and a touch of magnanimity. The painting was made after his international breakthrough in 1980.
