In 1909, he was a student of the Académie Matisse in Paris, where he was also in contact with the German artist circle of the Café du Dôme. After the First World War, he co-founded the Hamburg Secession, and after the Second World War, he was the founding director of the Hamburg State Art School. From 1956 to 1973, he worked as director of the Department of Visual Arts at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Signature: ‘F.
