  • FERMÍN AGUAYO (Burgos 1926 - Paris 1977) - Infante - Study Number 6 (1960)
    Mar. 20, 2025

    FERMÍN AGUAYO (Burgos 1926 - Paris 1977) - Infante - Study Number 6 (1960)

    Est: €6,000 - €9,000

Oil on paper attached to canvas. Dimensions: 65 x 50 cm. Signed: "a/60" (bottom right corner); "aguayo 60" (on the back). Provenance: Hélène Bokanowski Collection; Galerie Jeanne Bucher, Paris 1961. This portrait of the Infanta Margarita, inspired by the work of Velázquez, reflects the talent of Fermín Aguayo, a Spanish painter exiled in Paris. Born in 1926 in Sotillo, his life was marked by the Civil War, which forced him to move to Zaragoza and then to Paris in 1952, where he achieved recognition. In 1960, after a period of abstraction, he returned to figuration influenced by Velázquez, creating several interpretations of the Infanta. In this work, Aguayo reinterprets the original composition, focusing on the figure of the Infanta and eliminating the space surrounding her on the Prado canvas. Her palette of pinks, browns and greys and the geometric design of the skirt reflect her refined style and artistic transition. This piece, exhibited in 1961, is part of a series that engages with Spanish tradition, as did Picasso and Dalí, demonstrating Velázquez's enduring influence on modern art. Located in international warehouse.

FERMÍN AGUAYO (Sotillo de la Ribera, Burgos, 1926 - Paris, 1977). Untitled, 1979. Marker pen on paper. Attached exhibition catalog signed by Antonio Saura, Viola, Orus, Victoria, Pablo Serrano and Fermín Aguayo. Signed and dated in Measurements: 22 x 19.5 cm; 36 x 30 cm (frame). Fermín Aguayo was a pioneer of abstraction as part of the Grupo Pórtico de Zaragoza. His work began within the post-cubism to evolve towards abstraction and later, after his departure to Paris in September 1952, towards figurative painting. He arrived in Zaragoza at the end of the Civil War, after his father and his two older brothers were shot by Franco's side. In 1943 he got a job as a draughtsman at the Escuela Técnica de Maquinaria y Fundiciones del Ebro, where he met Eloy Giménez Laguardia (also a draughtsman), who together with Santiago Lagunas and Aguayo himself would form the most stable nucleus of the Grupo Pórtico, pioneer in the development of Spanish abstract painting. He began to paint, according to his own statements, inclined to avant-garde painting and stimulated by seeing a book of modern painting that he bought spending all the money he had and in which there were about ten black and white reproductions of paintings by Juan Gris, Ferdinand Léger, George Braque or Picasso among others. In April 1947 he presented his work with the joint exhibition Pórtico presenta nueve pintores held at the Centro Mercantil de Zaragoza, which included his works along with those of José Baqué Ximénez, Alberto Duce, Vicente García, Manuel Lagunas, Santiago Lagunas, Vicente López Cuevas, Manuel Pérez Losada and Alberto Pérez Piqueras, in what would be the starting point of the Grupo Pórtico, which would cease its activity in 1952, the year in which Aguayo left for France (possibly encouraged by Alfonso Buñuel, architect and avant-garde collage artist, younger brother of the great filmmaker), after making four mural paintings for the bar La Parrilla, of which three are preserved: Semana Santa, Tú y yo and A las cinco de la tarde, the last two acquired by the Cortes and the Government of Aragon respectively. In 1968 he participated in the exhibition The Traitres, organized by Denys Sutton at the Leicester Gallery in London, together with Sergio de Castro, Calliyannis and Lago. Died in 1977, it was not until 2005 that the first anthological exhibition of his painting was held at the Reina Sofia Museum, curated by Concha Lomba and Antonio Bonet Correa in collaboration with the Palacio de Sástago in Zaragoza. Attached is the exhibition catalog signed by Antonio Saura, Viola, Orus, Victoria, Pablo Serrano and Fermín Aguayo.

FERMÍN AGUAYO (Sotillo de la Ribera, Burgos, 1926 - Paris, 1977). "La boucherie", Paris, 1961. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the upper corner. Provenance: - Gallery Jeanne Bucher, Paris. - Collection Claude Bernard, Paris. Exhibitions: Galerie Jeanne Bucher. Paris. Measurements: 100 x 100 cm; 102 x 102 cm (frame). "La boucherie" belongs to the last period of Fermín Aguayo's life, who, having been a pioneer of abstraction in Zaragoza with his Grupo Pórtico, ended up turning towards a return to figuration. But, as we see here, it is a figuration that extracts from reality only what is essential, both in form and color, both reduced to the maximum, and yet retaining a deep poetic breath. Indeed, a banal alignment of cold cuts of veal and chicken is charged with an unusual plastic handling. More specifically, this work was made during the period in which he was hired, while already in Paris, by Jean-François Jaeger of the Jeanne Bucher gallery as a professional painter with a monthly salary, which gave him great stability in his pictorial work, which evolved towards the essential and intimate figurativism that we show here. Fermín Aguayo was a pioneer of abstraction as a member of the Grupo Pórtico de Zaragoza. His work began within the post-cubism to evolve towards abstraction and later, after his departure to Paris in September 1952, towards figurative painting. He arrived in Zaragoza at the end of the Civil War, after his father and his two older brothers were shot by Franco's side. "Landscape with poplars" belongs to the last period of Fermín Aguayo's life, who having been a pioneer of abstraction in Zaragoza with his Grupo Pórtico, ended up turning towards figuration again. The return to figuration met with great success in the French capital, where he lived from the fifties onwards. Oct. 15, 2015

    Fermin Aguayo (1926-1977) Les sardines
