    The baritone Eugène Massol in the role of Ashvérus in the opera "The Wandering Jew". 1852. Salt print from a glass negative. 23,7 x 17,2 cm. Mounted to original card (foxing, creases), annotated in pencil lower left on mount. Active primarily in the 1850s-1860s, the Franco-Spanish photographer Count Olympe Clemente Augusto Alejandro Aguado de las Marismas was one of several early photographers who learned from Gustave Le Gray. Aguado pioneered a number of photographic processes. He was also a founding member of the influential French Photographic Society in 1854. From his studio on the Place Vendôme, he initially worked with daguerreotypes, but by the early 1850s, was already experimenting with other photographic processes, namely with negative paper and collodion on glass. Like Le Gray, Aguado taught photography to a number of his friends, among them Camille Silvy and he frequently served as a judge for the French Photographic Society's exhibitions during the 1850s and 1860s. – Some light foxing spots in upper portion, otherwise a strong print with a rich violet-brown tone and in good condition.
