Joaquín Agrasot y Juan Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1837 - d. 1919

Joaquín Agrasot y Juan (24 December 1836 – 8 January 1919) was a Spanish painter of the Realistic style who produced many works in the Costumbrismo genre.

Agrasot was born in Orihuela. His studies began in his home town and, in 1856, he received a fellowship from the "Diputación Provincial de Alicante", the local government. He then enrolled at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos de Valencia, where he studied with the art restorer Francisco Martínez Yago, the father of Salvador Martínez Cubells.[1] In 1860, he had his first showing at an agricultural fair in Alicante, where he was awarded a gold medal.[2]

The following year, he received another fellowship to study in Rome. While there, he became a member of the artistic circle that congregated at the Antico Caffè Greco; a group that included Eduardo Rosales, José Casado del Alisal and Marià Fortuny.[1] These contacts had a profound influence on his style. He submitted many canvases to the National Exhibition of Fine Arts and received substantial recognition.

After three years, he returned to Orihuela, then lived in Granada at an artists' commune, got married, and went back to Italy, remaining until early 1875, when he returned to Spain upon hearing that his friend, Fortuny, had died. This time, he settled permanently in Valencia.[1] The following year, he received a medal at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Later, he became a member of both the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and his alma mater, San Carlos.[2] He often served as a jury member for the Academies' exhibitions. He died in Valencia, aged 82.

Although he largely devoted himself to Costumbrismo paintings, which were often criticized as being too commercial, his paintings on historical subjects were very popular. In 1884, the Spanish government bought his painting "The Death of the Marqués del Duero" for display in the Senate.

Madonna with Child, Italian School, Adam van Noort (Amberes c. 1561-Amberes, 1641) 16th Century Flemish

        Est: €18,000 - €20,000

Oil on board, 60 x 39 cm. Possibly the best preserved and finest version of the six known versions of this artist. This masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, executed in oil on panel, depicts the Virgin Mary in an intimate scene with the Christ Child, characterized by profound religious symbolism and exceptional technical mastery. The Virgin, dressed in a rich red robe and draped in a dark blue mantle, tenderly holds the Child as he gently caresses her. The architectural background, with its classical arches and structures, suggests a direct influence from Renaissance architecture, likely inspired by the great masters of the era. The choice of oil on panel as a medium showcases meticulous technique, allowing for a vibrant interplay of light and shadow, and a detailed representation of textures, from the soft fabrics to the infant's skin. This piece not only reflects the religious devotion of the time but also a high degree of artistic virtuosity characteristic of the Italian School of the 16th century, where the idealization of the characters is combined with a humanistic approach. Provenance: ex-Spanish private collection, Barcelona.

In this work we see a theme very much to the taste of the Spanish bourgeoisie of the second half of the XIX century and beginning of the XX century, the costumbrista scenes, cheerful and narrative, starring mischievous altar boys. Most commonly, these scenes were treated as we see here, with a precise and descriptive drawing and a special attention to detail, both in gestures, expressions and clothing as well as in the scenery surrounding the boys, usually interiors such as the one depicted here, a richly decorated dependency of the temple. Measurements: 49 x 26,5 cm; 77 x 56 cm (frame). Starting from the beautiful and unattainable odalisques of Ingres, of so pale skin and so elegant gestures that always lead to think of a captive Christian princess, never an Arab woman, the diverse pictorial schools will be developing a whole new iconography that looks for to recreate in a fantastic way - since of East nothing is known - a world prohibited to the westerners and full of attractiveness. Agrasot began his training in his native Orihuela, where he was granted a pension from the Diputación de Alicante to study at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos de Valencia. Important on canvas from the best stage of maturity of the Valencian master, signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 70 x 50 cm. 100 x 80 cm framed. Joaquín Agrasot Juan (Orihuela, December 24, 1836-Valencia, January 8, 1919) was a Spanish painter, framed in the realist and costumbrista genre. Currently, the Prado Museum preserves two works by the painter Oriolano in its collection. Likewise, the Carmen Thyssen Museum in the city of Malaga and the Museum of Fine Arts in Valencia have paintings by Agrasot in their collections. Special mention deserves the Palace of the Senate of Spain, which houses the painting “Death of the Marquis of Duero”, and the Pedrera Martínez Collection, which contains more than eighty paintings by the 19th century master. Agrasot's style falls within pictorial realism, being interested in gender themes and regional customs, without abandoning the nude, oriental themes and portraits. Forced by fashion, he also worked on history paintings with which he could achieve success in the official channels of nineteenth-century Spanish art. The influence of his good friend Fortuny was decisive in his painting.

The portraits and genre scenes were very popular among the Spanish bourgeois clientele of the 19th century, within a context still inherited from romanticism, which sought in the idealized recreation of the past an escape from everyday reality. Many painters of the time worked along these lines, seeking to capture scenes of the past with the greatest possible verism, recreated with precise attention to detail, worked with a language of academic roots or, as in the case of this panel, with a distinctly modern language, especially sensitive to light and atmosphere. This type of scenes starring everyday characters are framed within the genre of genre painting, scenes worked with a special narrative and descriptive eagerness, which in Spain will have as main formal reference Velázquez and his contemporaries. Agrasot began his training in his native Orihuela, where he was granted a pension from the Diputación de Alicante to study at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia. Measurements: 46 x 33 cm (album). This binding contains a set of pencil drawings by the artist Joaquin Agrasot. Most of them show landscape scenes taken in a sketchy way, so it is likely that they are scenes taken from nature as sketches by the artist himself. The collection also includes works depicting characters, also painted from this technical perspective. It should be noted that, despite the diversity of scenes in the collection, all the drawings have an aesthetic typical of genre painting. JOAQUÍN AGRASOT (Orihuela, Alicante, 1837 - Valencia, 1919). "Valencian musician". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 36 x 80,5 cm; 62 x 106 cm (frame). We are in front of a remarkable and characteristic example of the regionalist naturalism of Joaquín Agrasot, who favoured scenes with Valencian musicians in domestic environments like the one we are dealing with. In a courtyard lined with geraniums and with hens pecking in the foreground, a guitar player sets about improvising some tunes in front of a group of friends outside the painting. The painter thus constructs a spontaneous picture with a juicy folkloric flavour. Agrasot began his training in his native Orihuela, where he was granted a pension by the Diputación de Alicante to study at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia. A disciple there of Francisco Martínez Yago, he won awards in his early years, such as the gold medal at the Alicante Provincial Exhibition in 1860. In 1863 he was granted a new grant, this time to travel to Rome, where he came into contact with Rosales, Casado del Alisal and Fortuny. He established close ties of friendship with the latter, and his painting was profoundly influenced by the style of the Catalan painter. He periodically sent canvases to the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, where he won third medals in 1864 and second in 1867. Agrasot remained in Italy until 1875; after Fortuny's death he returned to Spain, already a painter of recognised prestige, a member of the Academies of San Carlos and San Fernando, and took part as a juror in several art exhibitions. In 1886 he was awarded the art medal at the Universal Exhibition in Philadelphia, and in 1888 the second medal at the International Exhibition in Barcelona. Agrasot's style was in keeping with realism, and he was particularly interested in genre themes and regional genre painting. However, he also worked on nudes, oriental themes and portraits. He is represented in the Museo del Prado, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Valencia, the MUBAG in Gravina (Alicante) and the Academia de San Carlos in Valencia.

        Est: €4,000 - €5,000

JOAQUÍN AGRASOT (Orihuela, Alicante, 1837 - Valencia, 1919). "Portrait of a Man with a Pipe". Oil on canvas. It has repainting on the pictorial surface. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 67 x 55 cm; 91 x 80 cm (frame). In this portrait, the painter depicts an elderly man smoking a pipe thoughtfully. He wears a dark waistcoat and a straw-coloured beret. The tones contrast with the dark background, which emphasises the figure. His attitude is absent and somewhat reflective, oblivious to the viewer, to whom he does not direct his gaze. The painter has used a broad brushstroke, full of matter, applied with ease on the surface so that it does not melt completely, giving texture and chromatic vibration to the whole. Agrasot began his training in his native Orihuela, where he was granted a scholarship by the Diputación de Alicante to study at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia. A disciple there of Francisco Martínez Yago, he won awards in his early years, such as the gold medal at the Provincial Exhibition in Alicante in 1860. Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Oil on canvas. Measurements: 328 x 118 cm. Joaquín Agrasot Juan (Orihuela, December 24, 1836-Valencia, January 8, 1919) was a Spanish painter, framed in the realist and costumbrista genre. Currently, the Prado Museum keeps in its collection two works by the painter Oriolano. Likewise, the Carmen Thyssen Museum in the city of Malaga and the Museum of Fine Arts in Valencia have paintings by Agrasot in their collections. Special mention should be made of the Palace of the Senate of Spain, which houses the painting "Death of the Marqués del Duero", and the Pedrera Martínez Collection, which contains more than eighty paintings by the 19th-century master. Agrasot's style falls within pictorial realism, being interested in gender issues and regional costumbrismo, without abandoning the nude, oriental themes and portraits. Obliged by fashion, he also worked on history paintings that could be successful in the official channels of nineteenth-century Spanish art. The influence of his good friend Fortuny was decisive in his painting.

JOAQUIN AGRASOT (Orihuela, Alicante, 1837 - Valencia, 1919). "Musketeers in an inn", 1885-1890. Oil on panel. Signed in the lower right corner. Work reproduced in "Joaquín Agrasot y Juan (1836-1919). Anthological Exhibition", Alicante, Diputación Provincial, 2002, pp. 142-143. Measurements: 26.5 x 41 cm; 50 x 64.5 cm (frame). The portraits and scenes of musketeers were very popular among the Spanish bourgeois clientele of the 19th century, within a context still inherited from romanticism, which sought in the idealized recreation of the past an escape from everyday reality. Many painters of the time worked along these lines, seeking to capture scenes of the past with the greatest possible verism, recreated with precise attention to detail, worked with a language of academic roots or, as in the case of this panel, with a distinctly modern language, especially sensitive to light and atmosphere. This type of scenes starring musketeers are part of the genre of casacón painting, scenes worked with a special narrative and descriptive eagerness, which in Spain will have Velázquez and his contemporaries as the main formal reference. On this occasion Agrasot places a group of musketeers around a table in an interior courtyard, already recurrent in his production (his work "En el patio de una alquería" shows his characters in this same location). In the background, inside the premises, a group in a relaxed chat with the innkeeper closes the composition in a masterful way. Agrasot was able to learn the genre of "tableautines" during his Roman stay, seeking to recall a historical France, recalled by the literature of the early nineteenth century, in whose genre the novelist Alexandre Dumas stood out. Agrasot began his training in his native Orihuela, where he was granted a pension from the Diputación de Alicante to study at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos de Valencia. A disciple there of Francisco Martínez Yago, in his early years he won awards such as the gold medal at the Provincial Exhibition of Alicante in 1860.
