        Affandi (1907 – 1990) - Withered Sunflowers

        Est: ₱5,000,000 - ₱6,500,000

Withered Sunflowers signed and dated 1978 (lower right) oil on canvas 48" x 78" (120 cm x 200 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by Kartika Affandi confirming the authenticity of this lot Whithered Sunflowers is a remarkable example of Affandi’s unique expressionist style, showcasing his characteristic method of painting directly from the tube. Known as one of Indonesia's most prolific maestros, Affandi was a self-taught artist who left an indelible mark on the art world. With many of his works housed in museums and private collections globally, he remains one of the most celebrated figures in Indonesian modern art. prestigious international exhibitions, including the Venice and Sao Paulo Biennales. Notably, his work was recently featured at the 2024 Venice Biennale, further emphasizing its continuing relevance. Among his many honors, he received the Peace Award from the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation in 1977 and Indonesia’s prestigious Bintang Jasa Utama, an honor given by the president for extraordinary service to the nation, in 1978. Created in 1978, Whithered Sunflowers reflects Affandi’s fascination with the sun and sunflowers, a recurring motif in his work. Much like Van Gogh, one of his artistic idols, Affandi captured the flowers in their natural environment rather than in a vase. His dynamic portrayal of sunflowers, always seeking the sun, breathes life into the composition. The painting is dominated by deep greens, with the sunflowers themselves depicted in bold black and orange hues. Affandi’s signature gestural strokes guide the viewer’s gaze across the canvas, from the vibrant sun at the upper right—rendered in shades of blue and streaks of yellow white—to the field of sunflowers, dynamically arranged in a diagonal sweep from right to left. This painting stands out not only for its rich color palette and emotive energy but also for its impressive size, measuring two meters, which is rare for Affandi’s works. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Affandi Museum, signed by his daughter Kartika Affandi, who oversees the estate, Whithered Sunflowers is an extraordinary and rare masterpiece from one of Indonesia’s greatest artists

96 x 130 cm ; 126 x 159 cm ( with frame ) oil on canvas signed and dated 70 lower right Literature : Sardjana Sumichan, Affandi Volume III, Bina Lestari Budaya Foundation, Jakarta, 2007, p. 46 | Provenance: Collection of Raka Sumichan; Private collection, Indonesia (acquired from the above) 阿凡迪《太阳之塔》1970年作 油彩 画布 款识:A 70(右下) The Tower of the Sun is a symbol and mascot of Expo 1970, "Progress & Harmony for Mankind" in Osaka, standing at a height of 70 meters. Although all the pavilions have been dismantled, this statue is still preserved and can be seen to this day in the Expo Commemoration Park in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. This mascot was deliberately painted by Affandi during the daytime because he wanted to capture its details which wouldn't be visible at night. Therefore, the painting features bright colors reflecting the morning sunlight. Affandi's admiration is evident in this artwork. The Tower of the Sun, created by Taro Okamoto, a renowned sculptor with many works in Hakone Sculpture Park, Japan. The strength of the strokes is clearly visible in this painting, with both faces of the statue painted very vividly and beautifully. There are colorful flags depicted, black, red, and green, symbolizing Children's Day in Japan. The Tower of the Sun holds profound significance for the Japanese people, representing the Goddess of the Sun and Universe. Because of its deep meaning for humanity, the Tower of the Sun will continue to be immortalized. In this painting, the frame is intentionally created as a radiant beam of positive energy towards the admirers of this artwork, in line with the meaning of this mascot: Goddess of The Sun and Universe.

        Affandi (1907 - 1990) - Bali Barong

        Est: ₱600,000 - ₱780,000

PROVENANCE: Christie’s, Modern And Contemporary Art Online 2021, Hong Kong, April 21, 2021, Lot 55 Bali Barong signed and dated 1968 (lower left); inscribed ‘Bali Barong’ (lower right) pastel on paper 24” x 33 1/2” (61 cm x 85 cm) WRITE UPForemost Indonesian modernist Affandi depicts in this work the Barong, a Balinese mythological creature that is regarded as a protector spirit and is depicted as a red-headed lion. For the Balinese, the Barong represents all that is good and virtuous; he symbolizes justice, righteousness, health, and prosperity. There is an enduring story in Balinese mythology that tells of the battle between Barong and Rangda, the queen of demons who leads an army of witches. This conflict centers around the Balinese concept of “Rwa Bhineda,” which means “two opposites.” The Balinese believe in dualism— that everything exists as a balance between two opposing forces (good and evil, birth and death, health and sickness, black and white, constructive and destructive, etc.). For the Balinese, this is the world’s natural order. The concept of Rwa Bhineda is crucial to understanding the said battle. The Balinese people, like most cultures, believe in the eternal and relentless struggle between good and evil. The conflict between Barong and Rangda symbolizes the endless contradiction that is inherently present in the order of all things. As such, Balinese culture counts among its attributes the Barong Dance, representing Barong and Randa’s clash, which Affandi depicts in this masterpiece. In the work at hand, the Barong, accompanied by his companion monkeys, engages in a fierce war with Rangda and her army of witches. She is eerily depicted with her long, protruding tongue. Affandi’s chaotic composition and expressionistic swirls, strokes, and sinuous lines evoke the dance’s dynamism and importance in fostering the idea of Rwa Bhineda, that is, the continuous struggle against forces of evil to retain harmony and balance. Affandi first visited Bali in 1939 and had always frequented the alluring island since then. The Barong dance and its associated myth resonate not only with Affandi’s cultural consciousness but also with his patriotic sentiments. Coming from his experiences as an artist-revolutionary during the Indonesian War for independence from the Dutch Empire, the battle between Barong and Rangda encapsulates the Indonesians’ collective identity as freedom fighters. Thus, through his Bali sojourns and this work, Affandi found even greater meaning in the Indonesian motto of “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika,” which means “Unity in Diversity.” In all aspects, Barong is a ringing representation of Affandi’s almost spiritual experience with Bali, which allowed him to exalt his lived experiences, emotions, and creative instincts. Affandi (1907 - 1990) - Seascape

        Est: ₱6,500,000 - ₱8,450,000

Seascape signed and dated 1984 (bottom) oil on canvas 47 1/4” x 78 3/4” (120 cm x 200 cm) PROVENANCE: Sotheby’s, Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Art Day Sale, Hong Kong, July 8, 2020, Lot 315 WRITE UPAAffandi is renowned for his avant-garde style, which defied conventional artistic norms. His paintings are characterized by bold, dynamic brushwork, vibrant colors, and an almost visceral, expressionist approach to portraying subjects. This unique style set him apart from many of his contemporaries and contributed to his status as a trailblazer in the Indonesian art scene. Affandi’s use of color is a hallmark of his work. He employed a wide spectrum of vibrant hues, often in nonrepresentational ways, to evoke strong emotional responses. His vivid palette adds an element of raw energy and vitality to his paintings. So much so that Affandi’s work has become synonymous with his technique called “squeezing the tube” wherein he, quite literally, squeezes the tube containers of his paint directly into a canvas, creating an impasto effect that not only creates a sense of rawness to his works, but also evokes a sense of dimensionality to a medium that is historically flat and two-dimensional. Affandi’s fearless experimentation and unique style had a profound impact on the development of modern art in Indonesia. He not only pushed the boundaries of artistic expression but also inspired subsequent generations of Indonesian artists to explore their creative potential. (Jed Daya)

The drying of the rice, signed with initials (lower right), oil on canvas, 42,5x53 cm, , Provenance:-Collection Mr A. Levisson (his name is written in pencil on the stretcher), thence by descent to the present owner., Affandi is a renowned Indonesian painter famous for his expressive and unique style. Born in 1907 in Cirebon, Indonesia, he began his artistic journey at a young age in Bandung, West Java, as a film poster painter for cinemas. Until the end of his life, he succeeded in becoming one of the most influential Indonesian artists. Affandi is known for his ability to capture the essence of his subjects through bold brushwork and bright colors. Since his debut in Bandung, Affandi's paintings mostly feature scenes of daily life, natural landscapes, and self-portraits. He often paints with his fingers, avoiding traditional brushes, which gives his work a distinctive, raw quality.Affandi's biographers said that Affandi once exhibited at a night market in Bandung and was visited by Syafe'i Soemardja - a figure in Indonesian fine arts and architecture education. In the 1930s, Soemardja studied art at the Rijksinstituut tot Opleiding Voor Tekenleraren in Amsterdam and the Pedagogical Institute in Vienna. In 1935, after Soemardja finished his studies in Europe, he worked as a teacher in Bandung. He had just returned from Europe when he saw the Affandi exhibition. Soemardja not only praised Affandi's works but also bought them. Affandi recalled Soemardja's words, "If I buy your painting, it's not because it is good. But because soul is mature in the painting." It is not surprising that Affandi later admitted that, without Soemardja's encouragement, he would never have had a career as a painter.Affandi’s two paintings, one of which records the market atmosphere (dated 1938), and the other shows the rice harvest in a village (undated), can be said to be some of Affandi’s early paintings representing the Bandung period. The origin of this painting is from the relationship between Sjafe'i Soemardja, who had been a mediator for his colleague A. (Dolf) Levisson - who worked in the then East Indies as a teacher of physical education and German - who then bought it. Levisson's family spent the years 1940 - 1945 in the Japanese concentration camps. In late 1948 or early 1949, the Levissons returned to the Netherlands, where they lived first in Alkmaar and later in Amsterdam. Both paintings hung there in his home until Dolf Levisson's death and then came into the hands of his only son, R.A. Levisson, the husband of the current owner's mother who died last year.Aminudin TH Siregar, Indonesian art historian
