The current work depicts a fabulous scene brimming with Impressionistic characteristics including areas of impasto and the appearance of being painted a la plein air. The scene depicts a bustling outdoor area with tables where people appear to sit and eat, with shops in the background and the coast with beach and tropical trees on the upper right hand quadrant. Signed lower left. Presented with a liner and in a masterful wood and gesso frame with gilt finish. Provenance: The estate of a lady, Mamaroneck, NY Dimensions: Sight: 8" H x 13 1/4" W Frame: 14 1/2" H x 19 1/2" W About the Artist: Lucien Adrion was a French painter best known for his Impressionistic depictions of figural landscapes. His subject matter varied from scenes throughout the French countryside to bustling street scenes. Adrion was born in 1889 and moved to Paris at the age of 18, where he began his artistic career as a fashion illustrator. Adrion was forced to Berlin at the outbreak of World War I, where he managed to continue his studies under Hermann Struck where he stayed until the end of the war. Following the war, Adrion was allowed to return to Strasbourg, and eventually to Paris where he set up his studio. Having befriended and worked closely with Chaim Soutine. Lucien Adrion, der für seine Vorliebe für städtische Szenen bekannt ist, hat in vorliegendem Gemälde den Place Saint-Augustin in kräftigen Farben und illustrativen Details eingefangen. Benannt nach der nahegelegenen Kirche Saint-Augustin, ist der Platz ein belebter Verkehrsknotenpunkt im Herzen von Paris. Meisterlich gelang es Adrion das pulsierende Leben und die geschäftige Atmosphäre der französischen Metropole vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg mit ihren über die Straßen eilenden Passanten und leuchtenden Automobilen sowie den prächtigen Gebäuden, die den Platz umgeben, einzufangen. Die dreißiger Jahre brachten Adrion auch zunehmende Anerkennung in der Kunstwelt. Er stellte regelmäßig in angesehenen Pariser Galerien aus, darunter im renommierten Salon d' Automne und im Salon des Indépendants, und gewann das Interesse von Sammlern und Kunstkritikern gleichermaßen. Seine Werke fanden auch international Beachtung und trugen dazu bei, seinen Ruf als wichtiger Vertreter der Pariser Schule zu festigen. - Vereinzelte Retuschen.

(1889 Straßburg - 1953 Paris) Pariser Straßenszene In impulsivem, dynamischem Duktus angelegte Momentaufnahme eines von unzähligen Passanten und einer gerade haltenden Straßenbahn, belebten Boulevards in Paris. Unmittelbare, lichtdurchflutete Schilderung der Atmosphäre und des vielfältigen Lebens der französischen Metropole, wie sie Adrion mit Vorliebe schuf. Ausgebildet bei Hermann Struck in Berlin, wurde er nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg in Paris ansässig, wo er 1921 seine erste Einzelausstellung hatte. Der Impressionist gehörte der sog. Mai-Gruppe an und wurde maßgeblich von Maurice Utrillo und Eugène Boudin beeinflusst. 1926 und 1940/41 stellte er auf dem Salon des Indépendants, Salon d' Automne und Salon des Tuileries aus. Neben Paris und seiner Umgebung malte Adrion mit Vorliebe in der Normandie. Pastellkreide/Papier. R. u. sign.; 40 cm x 50 cm. Rahmen. Pastel chalk on paper. Signed.

Provenance Sale; Roseberys, London, 6 Febuary 2016, lot , where purchased by the present owner Andrion was born in Strasbourg, France where he began his career as a draftsman before moving to Paris in 1907. In 1921, Adrion debuted with his inaugural solo exhibition at Galerie ChÃ©ron. By 1926, at the age of thirty-seven, he held his first significant exhibition at the Salon des IndÃ©pendants, subsequently becoming a regular exhibitor there. In 1940, Adrion showcased his works at the Salon dâAutomne, followed by an exhibition at the Salon des Tuileries in 1941, where he presented several landscapes. With a mastery of color and light, Adrion infused his paintings with a vibrant energy that reflects the essence of early 20th-century France.

Adrion schuf zahlreiche Ansichten von Paris und Umgebung sowie Strandszenen in der Normandie, stilistisch besonders von Maurice Utrillo und Henri Rousseau beeinflusst. Nach einer Lehre als technischer Zeichner in Straßburg arbeitete Lucien Adrion als Modezeichner in Paris, München, Frankfurt, Berlin und London. Zu Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs siedelte er nach Berlin über und nahm Unterricht bei Hermann Struck. Erst nach Kriegsende konnte er nach Paris zurückkehren, wo er durch die Galeristen Chéron, Libande und Bigne gefördert wurde. 1926 stellte er erstmals im Salon des Indépendants aus, 1940 im Salon d'Automne.
