Adelman Jr. [1928 - April 9, 2014] scientist and artist was born in Mount Vernon, NY, son of William and Helen Adelman; he is survived by his wife Jean Mayo Adelman, sons Everett Mayo Adelman, John and daughter Willa. Educated in NYC public schools and the Bronx High School of Science, a graduate of Fordham University, MSC University of Vermont, PhD. University of Rochester, Dr. Adelman was a research scientist, teaching professor and author in the areas of neurophysiology and biophysics. Upon his retirement from science in 1994 he became an active artist and businessman in Falmouth MA as owner of Apogee Gallery. His career as a scientist and academic began in 1955 working for the School of Aviation and Space Medicine at Randolph AFB, San Antonio TX. He was a professor at the University of Buffalo and Full Professor at the University of Maryland - Baltimore. Until retirement as Chief of the Laboratory of Biophysics at NIH, he directed laboratory research for the NIH at the MBL, Woods Hole for 23 years, specializing in giant axon profusion studies on the squid nerve, technically called "excitable membrane" research. A lifetime member of the MBL Society he was also belonged to many professional societies and was distinguished by election to the Board of Trustees at the MBL from 1971-75. Internationally recognized in neurophysiology and biophysics, he collaborated and lectured internationally from the UK to Chile and Japan, amongst other countries. With a lifelong interest and early training in art, upon retirement, he redirected his career as a painter, art and theater critic for the Falmouth Enterprise, and art entrepreneur as a Falmouth gallerist. With recognition for artistic achievement he became a member of the Boston Copley Society of Art. He was also a member of the Cape Cod Art Association and Falmouth Artists Guild. He continued to paint with the Guild Portrait Workshop workshop until his recent hospitalization and much appreciated the fellowship of that group. William had an active exhibition record winning "firsts" and "best" in New England juried shows and won the Haney Medal of the School Art League of NYC. Also featured in many art reviews, his paintings were favorably described by Lawrence N. Jenson, AWS. Since the 70s, both William and his wife have been active in community theater from Bethesda, MD to Woods Hole and Falmouth. A director and sometimes set designer, William belonged to the Falmouth Theater Guild, Woods Hole Theater Company, and the Fireside Comedy Club.
