  • JQ Adams ALS Re; Lecture "Asylum for coloured orphan children" Many who were Children of Slaves.
    Jan. 29, 2025

JQ Adams ALS Re; Lecture "Asylum for coloured orphan children" Many who were Children of Slaves.

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

John Quincy Adams Quincy, MA, October 4, 1843 JQ Adams ALS Re; Lecture "Asylum for coloured orphan children" Many who were Children of Slaves. ALS An autograph letter signed by John Quincy Adams regarding a lecture at the Colored Orphan Asylum. 1p, measuring 7.5" x 7.5" (sight), Quincy, dated October 4, 1843. Signed "J. Q. Adams" and addressed to Miss Aricartha Miller. Adams politely declines an invitation to deliver a lecture at the Asylum, citing previous engagements. The letter has been matted and framed along with a portrait of Adams to the overall size of 18.25" x 14". With flattened mail folds, light toning, and faint foxing scattered throughout. Boldly signed. In full: "I have received your letter of the 19th of last month, and regret that previous engagements deprive me of the power of complying with your benevolent invitation to me to deliver a Lecture for the benefit of the Asylum for coloured orphan children. I duly appreciate the motives upon which this humane and truly charitable institution is founded, and should be happy to contribute in promoting its success. It will probably not be in my power to visit the city of New York during the present year." John Quincy Adams took a vehement stance against slavery, paired with his desire to fight for the rights of women and Native Americans. During his time in Congress, Adams had become increasingly critical of slavery and was particularly opposed to the annexation of Texas and the Mexican–American War, which he saw as a war to extend slavery. He led the repeal of the "gag rule", which had prevented the House of Representatives from debating petitions to abolish slavery. Two years prior to writing this letter, Adams joined the case of the United States v. The Amistad, arguing on behalf of the African slaves who had revolted and seized the Spanish ship. He successfully defended the slaves and refused to be billed for his services. Adams believed that his arguments on the evils of slavery should not only apply to the Supreme Court Justices, but to the national audience at large. The Colored Orphan Asylum was founded in Manhattan in 1836 by three Quakers Anna and Hanna Shotwell and Mary Lindley Murray. It was one of the first of its kind in the United States to take in black children whose parents had died, or were not able to take care of them. The asylum housed on average four hundred children annually. *The Massachusetts Historical Society has the original letter from Aricartha Miller in their collections. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses. • J.Q. Adams Poem - Beautifully Penned and Fully Signed
    Jan. 29, 2025

J.Q. Adams Poem - Beautifully Penned and Fully Signed

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

John Quincy Adams n.p., May, 1834 J.Q. Adams Poem - Beautifully Penned and Fully Signed AQS A scarce and captivating autograph poem signed, 1p., 6" X 7.5", [May 1834], titled "Sonnet To Miss Margaret L Gamble In remembrance of an excursion in company with her, and a numerous party to Harper's Ferry, on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal - May 1834." Penned on a sheet of letterhead adorned with a vignette of a neoclassical fountain in a landscape and a dog reclining at its base. Lightly and evenly toned, with light foxing throughout. A very attractive and unique example for display! In full: "Lady! The remnant of my days is small - /And many a joyous year, in prospect, thine - / But when hereafter thou, in life's decline, / Of fore gone years and ten / shalt bear the pall; "Then - while reminded of that final call / This frail and mortal vesture to resign; / And [?] from earthly Scenes to bliss divine - / Then - should before thine eyes, this volume fall, "Remember one, the Senior of thy Line, / Who in the opening blossom of thy Spring, / Saw that, in thee, to love and to admire; / To which, his Soul in brighter worlds shall cling - /And when on Seraph's pinions though shalt rise, / Shall hail Thee, welcome to Thy kindred skies. John Quincy Adams." Adams was an enthusiastic, and accomplished, poet, frequently favoring young ladies with his charming verse, as he does here. Now in his own "life's decline," Adams pauses to reflect upon youth and age; birth and death. Far from a morose and pedantic consideration of these weighty tropes, however, Adams' sonnet is light and free - much as the outing on the river which inspired the verse must have been. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses. • John Q. Adams Personally Owned Newspaper as Secretary of State

John Q. Adams Personally Owned Newspaper as Secretary of State

    Est: $300 - $400

John Quincy Adams Portland, ME, August 21, 1821 John Q. Adams Personally Owned Newspaper as Secretary of State Newspaper Volume 18, no. 956 of "The Eastern Argus", subscribed to by John Quincy Adams while serving as Secretary of State. 4pp, 14.5" x 20", Portland, ME, August 21, 1821. Featuring secretarial ownership signature at top left of first page reading: "Sec. of State". Highlighted segments include President Monroe's Proclamation of August 10, 1821, a spread naming the Maine Republican nominations for Governor and Senate, as well as a report on the death of Napoleon Bonaparte. Areas of isolated dampstaining to outside edge of all pages, with scattered paper loss at paper's hinges. Expected tearing to edges throughout. Overall, very good. "The Eastern Argus" was a newspaper published in Portland, Maine, from 1803 to January 1921. In 1803, "gentlemen of the Republican party" invited Nathaniel P. Willis, father of the widely acclaimed journalist Nathaniel Parker Willis, to move from Boston to Portland to establish the newspaper in opposition to the Federalist Party. Later, it was strongly in favor of Maine's separation from Massachusetts and the formation of its own state, which was accomplished a year before the offered newspaper's printing. As Secretary of State, Adams would have undoubtedly subscribed to a number of different news sources so as to stay up to date on current events. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
