        Charles Francis Adams (1839-1915) Adams was the grandson of Louisa Catherine and John Quincy Adams; served as a colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War; Railroad Executive following the war. 9 ½” x 7 ¼” stock certificate for 5 shares, signed. Green. Issued to and signed twice by Adams. Some light glue residue at stub. Fine. Stamp and hole punch cancelled with the later affecting Adams' signature as President, his signature on verso is unaffected.

        CHARLES FRANCIS ADAMS 1807 - 1886) American diplomat and author, son of John Quincy Adams, helped settle the "Alabama" claims. Good content A.L.S. signed in full, 1p. 8vo. with transmittal envelope, Boston, Feb. 18, 1879 to a lady in Brooklyn. In part: "...I have now been absent from Great Britain eleven years and during that period have been so drawn away from English politics that I fear I cannot enlighten you about the 'famous cypher in English Diplomacy'. All I know is that in the seven years I spent there, there was no mystification...". Toned a bit at center, else very good. Matted with a portrait and set into a shadowbox frame. "Cyber mystification" refers to the belief that some European diplomatic correspondence was written in code.

He expects he has clear title: "...which was issued in Hancock's lifetime... and he died long after the time of return. Is the law of Massachusetts so gloriously uncertain that we must wait forty years to get title?...". Old catalog description at pasted bottom, slight uneven coloring to paper, else fine.
