Ansel Adams' artwork might never have become the American standard in nature photography had he pursued his original career plans. Finding school difficult, the only child was home-tutored, teaching himself to play piano and read music at age 12. His plans to become a musician changed in 1927 when he took the photograph that would change his course. The photographer Ansel Adams came into being with Monolith, the Face of Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, California (1927). His use of a red filter allowed him to capture a photo of the rock face capturing an emotional aspect.

His theory of visualization in which the photographer plans each element before taking the picture made Ansel Adams' artwork unique. The black and white photograph entitled "Ferns, Valley Floor, Yosemite National Park" was originally photographed ca. 1945; this is a later reprint attributed to ca. 1972-1974, from the Special Edition "Photographs of Yosemite" series. N.p. It depicts a soft bed of ferns, dappled with sunlight, emerging from the forest floor. Other Adams's special edition reprints have an edition stamp verso, but this work has not been examined out of the frame to verify that. Matted and framed behind TruVue AR anti-reflection glass in a silver-finished frame bearing a plaque engraved: "Ansel Adams 'Ferns, Yosemite Valley.'" Bearing several paper labels on the frame's paper backing verso providing title, series, and edition stamp information. The actual size of the photograph is approximately 7.5" x 9.5" while the overall size of the frame is approximately 17.5" x 20.375" x 1.75." Adams returned again and again to the subject of ferns, delighting in their unique shape and silhouette. Known Adams photographs depicting ferns were taken in several U.S. states over several decades; take for instance: Adams, "Ferns, Glacier National Park, Montana," ca. 1941; "Ferns near Kilauea Crater, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park," ca. 1956; and "Redwood Stump and Ferns, Rockefeller Grove, Redwood National Park, California," ca. 1964. Adams's interest in photographing natural scenery coincided with his joining the environmentalist Sierra Club in the 1920s. Although Adams did commercial photography to pay the bills, it was always transcendent views of the natural landscape that captured his imagination and inspired his technical photographic innovations. He helped found Group f/64, an association of photographers advocating "pure" photography which favored sharp focus and the use of the full tonal range of a photograph. He and Fred Archer developed a system of image-making called the Zone System, a method of achieving a desired final print through a technical understanding of how the tonal range of an image is the result of choices made in exposure, negative development, and printing. "Moon, Hernandez, New Mexico" was shot by Ansel Adams in the late afternoon on November 1, 1941 in the unincorporated community of Hernandez, New Mexico from a shoulder of highway US 84 / US 285. Interestingly, Adams had no idea that it would become his most popular image! This iconic work captures Adams' poetic artistry. The moon rises over a stark valley, and mountain peaks pierce the magical sky above, their verticality echoed by the countless white crosses in the church yard. According to the Ansel Adams Gallery, "To this day, it remains an enduring distillation of the American West—its desolate landscapes, its serrated peaks, its pioneering inhabitants."
