(Wohl Paris um 1860). -- An eine Dame, die ihn eingeladen hatte. Adam bedankt sich, muß aber leider absagen: "... une fatalité s'est placée entre votre bonne invitation et mon désir ...". Auch im Namen seiner Frau bitte er, die Absage zu entschuldigen. Um seine Situation zu beschreiben, füge er eine Federzeichnung mit einer Selbst-Karikatur bei. Das Bild zeigt den Künstler in zerrissener Kleidung und Holzpantinen, wie er sich weinend die Haare rauft und mit einem Fuß auf seiner Maler-Palette steht, vor der seine zerbrochene Pfeife liegt. Suite de sujets composées et dessinées par Victor Adam. Les portraits par N. Maurin. Paris, Jeannin, n.d. (ca. 1830), w. lithogr. title and 12 (partly misnumbered) plates and a loosely inserted extra plate, all with handcoloured details (mostly with use of gold/ silver, bound in contemp. giltlettered halfleather, large folio. (53.5 x 39 cm). Title (frontwr.?) w. vague folds and offsetting from turn-ins; the other plates waterst. in blank outer margin and occ. sm. other stains; one plate loosening. Joints split, outer corners bumped and covers rubbed. Acceptable copy for such a large volume, with owner's entry of Ernst L. Schlegel on first free endpaper. The 12 plates with the blindstamp of the publisher in lower margin. Rare. There also exists an Italian edition, dated 1835, incorporating a frontispiece portrait of Napoleon on horseback.
