Adam - General Plan of the Town and Fortifications of Spaltro, Showing the Situation of the Ancient Palance of the Emperor Dioclesian…. 2

            Est: $300 - $600

This folio architectural engraving is from Robert Adam's Ruins of the Palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Spalatro in Dalmatia. The work was published in London for the author in 1764. Adam's work was a stunning record of the Diocletian's Palace. Adam studied under the architect, Charles-Louis Clerisseau, to prepare and complete the engravings for the book. Some of the engravings were likely based on Clerisseau's original drawings. Some were based on F. Bartolozzi and F. Zucchi's work. The Critical Review stated the engravings had "a taste and execution that has never been equalled in this country [England]." Est: £10,000 - £15,000

Adam (Robert, 1728-1792) Preliminary design for an urn in the dining room at Osterley Park, Middlesex, pen and brown ink, brown wash, traces of black chalk under-drawing, signed and dated '1766', on fine laid paper with watermark initials 'GR', sheet 305 x 175 mm (12 x 6 7/8 in), under glass, very fine small splits within one or two of the heavily inked lines, handling creases, minor surface dirt, framed, 1766 Provenance:    Collection of John and Eileen Harris Literature: cf. Harris, Eileen, The Genius of Robert Adam: His Interiors, 2001, Chapter 10 "Osterley Park". Exhibited: Royal Academy and the V&A, Age of Neoclassicism, 1972 *** Exquisitely executed design for an urn in the dining room of Osterley Park; the 'palace of palaces' [Walpole]. A rare survival by the foremost Neoclassical architect of the 18th century. On his return from Italy in 1761 Robert Adam became a Fellow of the Royal Society, and thus established in practice, set out to revolutionize English domestic architecture. In place of the rigid grammar of the orders as described by Vitruvius and interpreted by Palladio, he substituted a new and elegant repertoire of architectural ornament based on a wide variety of classical sources ranging from antiquity to the Cinquecento. The success of the new style was immediate. The present drawing depicts a design for an urn that was intended to be one of a pair placed upon pedestals, made of carved, painted and gilded wood, with the finished examples attributed to John Linnell (1729-96) and still on display in the house today [see National Trust no. NT771750.3]. 'Osterely, Middlesex, was a botched Elizabethan pile when Adam came there in 1761; when he left in 1778 it was a 'palace of palaces... so improved and enriched that all the Percies and Seymours of Sion must die of envy' [op. cit. Harris, Eileen, 2001]. The original building on this site was a manor house built in the 1570s for banker Sir Thomas Gresham, who purchased the manor of Osterley in 1562. During the late 17th century, the estate was owned by Nicholas Barbon, a developer who mortgaged it to Child's Bank and then died in debt around 1698. As a result of a mortgage default, by the early 1710s, the estate came into the ownership of Sir Francis Child, the founder of Child's Bank. In 1761, Sir Francis's grandsons, Francis and Robert, employed the Scottish architect Robert Adam to remodel the house. Architectural drawings by Robert Adam rarely appear on the open market, despite having produced a significant number, this being due to the vast majority (nearly 9,000) having been purchased directly from the Adam family by Sir John Soane in 1833; which now forms one of the principal treasures of the museum. Unlike a relatively steady and finished "Office hand", the present drawing shows a vigour and passion that can only be by the architect himself, and is a preliminary drawing of a raw idea taking shape and being refined. The Soane Collection hold three similar preliminary drawings for different commissions, which allow for an excellent comparison of Adam's hand; see 'Preliminary design for a ceiling for the hall, c. 1773' [SM Adam volume 8/33], 'Preliminary design for a chimneypiece and overmantel mirror frame', 1787 [SM Adam volume 24/195], and 'Preliminary design for a girandole for the drawing room', 1775 [SM Adam volume 6/30]. Eileen Harris is an internationally recognised Robert Adam scholar, publishing extensively on the subject for over 40 years.

            Est: £800 - £1,200

Adam (Robert, 1728-1792), Attributed to. Three sheets of vaulted interiors, architectural facades and capriccio, pen and brown & grey inks over pencil, with grey wash, on laid paper without visible watermarks, sheets between 210 x 190 mm (8 1/4 x 7 1/2 in) and 200 x 250 mm (7 7/8 x 9 7/8 in), affixed at corners onto mount support, some damp-stains and browning, minor handling creases, unframed, [c.1754-1757] (3) ⁂ Traditionally thought to be by an Italian artist active in the early 18th century working in the circle of Ferdinando Galli-Bibiena (1657-1743). However, the distinctly British penmanship and character suggests an attribution to the Adam brothers, and the drawings closely relate to work by Robert Adam found in the travel albums from his Grand Tour of 1754 to 1757. Adam Architect' and dated '1762' in the lower left corner, probably in Adam's hand, further inscribed 'Design of a Chimney piece for The Right Hon. The Earl of Panmure' in brown ink in the upper centre, with scale and dimensions, on laid paper with large Britannia watermark, sheet 365 x 445 mm (14 1/4 x 17 1/2 in), under glass, laid onto support, old folds with some minor splitting, several repaired tears to edges, minor surface dirt, framed, 1762. Provenance: Purchased by the present owners circa 1980s Private collection, South West England Literature: cf. A.T. Bolton,The architecture of Robert and James Adam, 1922, Vol. II, index p. 26 ⁂ Original design by the leading proponent of the Neoclassical style in 18th-century interior design. Architectural drawings by Robert Adam rarely appear on the open market, despite having produced a significant number. The reason for this being that the vast majority were purchased by Sir John Soane in 1833 for the vast sum of £200, and are now held in the Soane Museum, London. The Soane Museum also hold another drawing of the same chimneypiece, possibly a studio copy after the present work, which is slightly smaller and without a scale, which they have attributed to Agostino Brunias (active 1763-1779) [see acc. no. SM Adam volume 22/71].

Robert Adam (1728-1792) ADAM, Robert (1728-1792). Ruins of the Palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Spalatro in Dalmatia. [London]: for the author, 1764. First edition of a magnificent architectural record of Diocletian’s Palace. Adam's work, with its elaborately engraved views, was the outcome of his visit to Spalatro (Split) during his Grand Tour and was intended to emulate the success of Robert Wood's The Ruins of Palmyra (1763). In Florence, he had met the architect Charles-Louis Clerisseau (1721-1820), who was to be Adam's instructor for the next two years and who was to supervise much of the engraving for the book in Venice and London. The engravings were probably based on drawings by Clerisseau (six of which are preserved in the Hermitage Museum), and were said by the Critical Review in October 1764 to possess ‘a taste and execution that has never been equalled in this country.’ Berlin Katalog 1893; Cicognara 3567: ‘opera magnifica e grandiosa’; Fowler 2; Harrison pp. 76-81; Millard II, 1; RIBA 27. Folio (526 x 370mm). 61 numbered engraved plates after C.-L. Clérisseau on 54 leaves, including frontispiece, the majority by F. Bartolozzi and F. Zucchi, several double-page or folding (occasional spotting and faint waterstains, a few plates just trimmed into platemark). Contemporary russia, sides with gilt borders, edges gilt (rebacked to style).

the auspicious painted demi lune shaped top, above a fluted frieze, decorated with paterae motifs, raised on anthemion leaf decorated columnar legs After a design by Robert Adam, 1728-1792. This example is similar to a table designed by Robert Adam for the saloon at Nostell Priory, a Palladian house, near Wakefield in Yorkshire. The tabletop is decorated with auspicious painted symbols, possibly derived from Baron Pierre Hughes d'Hancarville's Cabinet of the Hon. W. Hamilton. The harmonious use of urns, anthemion sprays and acanthus leaf swags, all emanating from a ray of ostrich feathers is engaging. The ostrich feather is symbolic of the law, truth, balance, order, harmony, and of morality. The goddess Themis was often depicted as carrying a sword while wearing an ostrich feather in her hair to symbolise truth and justice. The Egyptians knew Themis as Ma'at: the term 'magistrate' is derived from this ancient source. Tables similar to the model discussed here were thought to have been in the collection of the Dukes of Leinster. These were characterised by scagliola marble tops attributed to Pietro Bossi, who was active in Dublin from 1785 to 1798. Bossi is especially famous for his chimneypieces.
