    SS France. 1912.

    Est: $1,000 - $1,200

ARTIST: EDOUARD ADAM SIZE: 29 1/2 x 18 3/8 in./75 x 46.7 cm PRINTER: Imp. Crété, Paris DESCRIPTION: This dramatic and romantic scene is well suited for the illustrious SS France, who proved her power and grandeur over a 20-year career. She was introduced to the Transatlantic route in April, 1912—just five days after the Titanic's fatal crash. But she was well equipped for the treacherous waters: she was twice the size of any ship in the French merchant fleet, and, thanks to her novel quadruple-screw liner and Parsons steam turbines, she was the fastest and most powerful ship at sea. Her 2,000 passengers were lavished with Baroque interiors, portraits of Louis XIV and his family in the first class rooms, and the first ever grand staircase on an ocean liner. During World War I, she served the French Navy and acted as a hospital ship to 2,500 injured troops. Thereafter, she returned to the cruising life, and adopted a club-like following among the wealthy. The ship's specifications are included at bottom in French and English.
