  • ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM ACTON (BRITISH 1906-1945), PORTRAIT OF GEORGIA SITWELL
    Nov. 17, 2021

ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM ACTON (BRITISH 1906-1945), PORTRAIT OF GEORGIA SITWELL

    Est: £1,500 - £2,000

ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM ACTON (BRITISH 1906-1945)PORTRAIT OF GEORGIA SITWELLOil on canvas, oval95 x 67cm (37¼ x 26¼ in.)Catalogue Note:William Acton was the short-lived son of the collector and dealer Arthur Acton and the younger brother of Sir Harold Acton, the art historian and aesthete. The Actons had been raised by their parents near Florence at La Pietra, where their neighbours included the Sitwell family at Montegufoni, and Lord Berners. Few other portraits by the artist are widely known, apart from a series of pencil drawings of the Mitford Sisters which have bene extensively published. Another portrait of Georgia, Lady Sitwell was completed in a similar style to ones, depicting her contemporaries, sold at Christies in 2016 and 2018. The present lot has a much simpler composition and seemingly depicts Georgia at a younger age dressed in black- suggesting this may have been an earlier work.
