      STUDY OF A HAWK ATTRIBUTED TO JAMES ABERT (AMERICAN, 1820-1897). Watercolor and pencil on paper, unsigned. In a sponge decorated frame, 13 3/4'h. 17 3/4"w. Abert was a topographical engineer assigned to John Fremont's third expedition of 1845 to California. In addition to maps he also made notes on the wildlife of the regions he traveled in.
