    VICENTE BORRAS ABELLA (Valencia, 1867 - Barcelona, 1945). "Gypsies". Oil on cardboard. It has slight flaws and losses on the pictorial surface. Signed in the upper left corner. Measurements: 55 x 40 cm. With a sketchy and fast brushstroke the artist of this work composes an image starring two women. One is standing on the left side of the scene and is leaning relaxedly on a projection of the wall, while the other is crouching. Although the artist does not define the faces of the protagonists, their gestures suggest a certain everydayness and intimacy between them. Their colourful, patterned dresses indicate that they are women wearing regional costumes, typical of a specific area of Spain. Spanish painter and restorer who painted portraits, landscapes, seascapes and interiors. He taught at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. He began his training with his father, the painter Vicente Borrás y Mompó. He took part in numerous exhibitions and competitions, winning third medals at the National Exhibitions of 1890 and 1892, second in 1897 for the canvas entitled ¡Absueltos! and a decoration at the 1895 edition. He was also awarded a second medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900. His works are characterised by their strong luminosity and vibrant chromaticism.

For this poster, Borrás chose to reproduce Velázquez's "Portrait of Innocent X", which is regarded by many artists and art critics as the finest portrait ever created; however, it was deceptive advertising, as the portrait was not part of the exhibition.
