        Rookwood Pottery Vase by Louise Abel (German-American, 1894-1959) dated 1927. Signed, numbered, and dated on base. A striking and quite sizable matte-finished ceramic vase with 5 raised sections on the body, each decorated with a slip painted floral motif of magenta blossoms and emerald green leaves amidst mottled green hues. The vessel is marked on the base with the Rookwood logo (a back-to-back "R" and "P" surrounded by flames), "XXVII" to indicate the date 1927, identifying shape number "2930", and an encircled "A" (Louise Abel) artist's mark. A stunning ceramic vase by Rookwood artist Louise Abel that reflects the zeitgeist for organic motifs during the Arts and Crafts Movement! Size: 7.5" in diameter x 10.2" H (19 cm x 25.9 cm) The Rookwood Pottery Company was founded in 1880 by the artist Maria Longworth-Nichols who created a world-renowned ceramic studio in Cincinnati, Ohio that attracted many reputable artists and ceramicists from both the United States and Europe. Louise Abel was born in Widdern Wurttemburg, Germany and came to the U.S. with her parents in 1909. Louise studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy, the Art Students League in New York, The Louis Tiffany Foundation, The Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania, The Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, The Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, and the University of Cincinnati College of Liberal Arts.         Louise Abel (b.1894) for Rookwood Pottery, Floral bud vase, Cincinnati, OH, 1923, flowing matte floral motif on turquoise ground, signed, dated, numbered, with artist's cipher painted in black. Shape 2545-F. In excellent condition. Measures 2"x2"x7"h. Weight is 6.4 oz. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Collection. Louise Abel was born in Widdern Wurttemburg, Germany in 1894. She arrived with her parents in the United States in 1909 and studied at a large number of institutions, including the Cincinnati Art Academy, the Art Students League in New York, The Louis Tiffany Foundation, The Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania, The Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, The Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, and the University of Cincinnati College of Liberal Arts. She began her career as a decorator at Rookwood Pottery in 1919 at the age of 25. She produced a great volume of work from 1919 until 1932. She is most famous for her unique sculpted animal and figural work, designing many of the forms Rookwood used during her tenure. She was also an accomplished artist, doing beautiful slip painted pieces.
