    Yusoff Abdullah (b. 1928 - 2006) Wayang Kulit, 1981

    Est: RM15,000 - RM20,000

The merging of the figurative and abstract is evident in this rare painting by Yusoff Abdullah. It depicts the art of shadow puppet, a traditional form of theatre practised in the East Coast states of Peninsular Malaysia, including Kelantan and Terengganu. Stories from the ancient epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana are presented to the audience, reenacted through the lifting of puppets created by artful movements of the hand, accompanied with the rhythm of music instruments. As the puppeteer swiftly carries out the movement of the puppets, the illumination of light is suggested through an assortment of intertwined shapes and colour in the centre of the composition. Yusoff Abdullah belonged to the Angkatan SePelukis Malaysia generation of Dato' Hoessein Enas, known for portraits, landscape and historical events, executed in batik, oil and watercolour. He was the first Malaysian to exhibit in the former Soviet Socialist Republic in 1978, displaying his batik works at the Oriental Art Museum in Moscow. He was also a freelance photographer and once even set up an art gallery called Gallery 12 in a joint venture in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.

Born in 1928 in Kelantan, Yusoff Abdullah became a teacher after finishing school – a result that came from being inspired by his teachers at the young age of 10. He started mixing his art expressions and his passion for teaching, and in turn, he was bestowed the State Level Guru Aktif Art Teachers Award in 1984 in acknowledgement of his contribution in the Art Education. This particular painting uses the medium of batik and is filled with stunning colours and motifs of flowers. It captures two women, each creating their own batik piece as Yusoff Abdullah’s artistic flair is evidently presented in the backdrop where different designs and shades of batik clothes hang from above.

    Est: RM2,000 - RM3,000

Yusoff Abdullah treads into the realm of abstract this time, after having created many masterpieces with the countryside as his subject. This hypnotising piece reminds one of stained glass windows, what with the convoluted lines, design as well as the subject of boats that are amalgamated into one so gracefully. Lines upon lines meet and cross each other and each space and figure that is created out of those intercrossing lines are then decorated with different colours and patterns. The hints to this subject are the sails and timber that protrude from the boats, finally revealing that the subjects of this piece are boats. Wonderfully and colourfully done, this shows that the most beautiful of art arrangement can be created out of the simplest of things, as shown by the genius artist himself. Yusoff Abdullah was inspired by his teachers from the tender age of ten and he became a teacher after finishing school. He started mixing his art expressions and his passion for teaching, and in turn, he was bestowed the State Level Guru Aktif Art Teachers Award in 1984 in acknowledgement of his contribution in the education of arts.
