        Est: £8,000 - £10,000

HAMED ABDALLA (EGYPTIAN 1917-1985) NUHUD signed in Arabic lower right acrylic and mixed media on paper, laid on board 94.5 x 64cm; 37 1/4 x 25in 105.5 x 75cm; 41 1/2 x 29 1/2in (framed) Property from a Private Collection, London Provenance Dr Mohammed Said Farsi Literature Dr Sobhy Al Sharouny, A Museum in a Book, Cairo,1998, pp. 238 and 240, illustrated Hamed Abdalla was a pioneer of Egyptian and Arab modernism. A self taught artist from a modest peasant family in upper Egypt, he rose to prominence early in his career. Abdalla started painting at the age of 10 inspired by his fellahs' environment. Later his work centred on his development of what he called 'the Creative word', Arabic words expressed in paint, blending abstraction and human forms to create visual forms that expressed the meaning of those words. He held his first solo exhibition in 1941, before going on to show widely throughout Egypt in the 1940s including a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art Cairo (1949), when art critics, such as Badr Eddine Abu Ghazi, considered his work as a new school for Egyptian Art. At the same time Abdalla opened his Atelier in Cairo to teach new generation of artists such as Tahia Halim, Gazbia Serri, Enjy Efflatoun, Georges El Bahgory. His first trip to Paris saw him exhibit at the Gallery Bernheim-Jeune (1950), followed by a group show at the Palais du Louvre, and a show at the Egyptian Institute, London (1951). From the mid-1950s he was exhibiting throughout Europe, the US and Asia, including a group show at the Metropolitan Museum, New York (1956). He left Egypt for Denmark (1956) and France (1966), but was commited to the pan Arab movement, and exhibited widely in the Middle East and North Africa. In 1976, an exhibition of his work brought Abdalla back to Cairo for the first time since his emigration and in 1983 he returned for a show commemorating a half century of his art. At the time of his death in Paris, Abdalla had held over 100 solo exhibitions. His works are in various international collections and museums, such as the Egyptian Modern Art Museum Cairo, the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, Tate Modern London, the Barjeel Art Foundation, the Museum of Modern Art Tunis, the Mathaf Doha, the Institut du Monde Arabe Paris and the Dalloul Art Foundation Beirut.

§ HAMED ABDALLA (EGYPTIAN 1917-1985) HAMED ABDALLA (EGYPTIAN 1917-1985) nuhud signed in Arabic (lower right) acrylic and mixed media on paper laid down on board 96 x 64 cm (37 3/4 x 25 in) PROVENANCE Dr. Mohamed Said Farsi Dr. Mohamed Said Farsi (1934-2019) was one of the world’s great patrons of Egyptian art. In 1956 he was one of only 35 students from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia sent abroad for further education. Having obtained a BA in Architecture and Town Planning from the University of Alexandria in Egypt, he returned to Saudi Arabia and in 1972 became the Mayor of Jeddah. During his lifetime, he assembled the most important private collection of Modern Egyptian art. His collection became the first of its type to be fully documented with the publication of ‘A Museum in a Book: The Farsi Art Collection – the “Egyptian Works” owned by Dr. Mohammed Said Farsi’ by the critic and scholar Dr. Sobhy Sharouny (published 1998). The present work is from his lettrist expressionist series, which Abdulla had started in the 50's - see also, Lot 10. Symbolising the Arabic letters "نهوض" (Rise up! or Stand up!) it is complementary to The Coma and can be read as a human figure rising up from the ruins of the disastrous world of Arab defeat and betrayals. Putting the two works together could be like saying: 'don't stay in your coma, rise up!'. However, the work is open to individual interpretation. The two works were executed at the same period, and whilst the backgrounds of the two are very similar, it is not essential for them to be shown together. We are indebted to the family of the artist for assisting with the cataloguing of this lot.

§ HAMED ABDALLA (EGYPTIAN 1917-1985) HAMED ABDALLA (EGYPTIAN 1917-1985) al ghaybouba signed in Arabic (lower right) acrylic and mixed media on paper laid down on board 95 x 67 cm (37 1/2 x 26 1/3 in) PROVENANCE Dr. Abdalla is a key figure in Egyptian modernism and is renowned for having invented a kind of Arabic hieroglyphics suggesting human figures with Arabic words - see also, Lot 12. Painted circa 1977-1982, the present work is from the series al ghaybouba, (The Coma), suggesting a prostrate character in a field of destruction and desolation. The artist started this series after the Arab defeat in the Arab-Israeli war of June '67. Called al naksa in Arabic, it was a difficult moment for the Arab world, following the hope which had begun with the nationalization of the Suez Canal by President Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1956, and the subsequent popularity of the Pan-Arab movement. Abdalla moved from Egypt to Denmark in 1957 and later lived in France. From 1967 onwards, Abdalla regularly painted the theme of al ghaybouba. In 1980 he had planned return to Egypt, staying there for long periods but he was deeply disenchanted about Egypt's future, claiming that President Anwar Sadat had sold the country to the Americans. This sentiment culminated in his large fresco (14 metres in length) that is a modern day version of Napoleon's famed Description de l'Egypte. In the present work, Abdalla first executed the background in acrylic on crinkled paper, that he flattened afterwards with an iron. Then he painted a first black print of his form (here the word al ghaybouba), then he added large brushy colours, while in full movement of his entire body, in very few paint brushes. While he was painting, he used to think he was dancing. Lastly, he would finish the work by drying it with a hair dryer (giving the little crackings seen on the white brush strokes). We are indebted to the family of the artist in assisting with the cataloguing of this lot.
