Emily Abbott New Jersey, Minnesota, (1900 - 1989) frogs, 1959 watercolor on paper Signed and dated lower right. Biography from Jim's of Lambertville: Emily Abbott was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1900. After earning a degree from the University of Minnesota, she enrolled at the Minneapolis School of Art in 1933. While there, Abbott studied with renowned artist and teacher, B.J.0. Nordfeldt. During this time, Nordfeldt was involved in an unhappy marriage and spent most of his time traveling between various teaching positions and a home he kept in Santa Fe. A friendship developed between Abbott and Nordfeldt and the two artists kept in touch through letters. Abbott pursued her painting career and exhibited frequently, but it wouldn't be until the early 1940s, after Nordfeldt had settled in Lambertville, and finally divorced, that their relationship became more serious. In 1944, they married and aside from occasional travels, remained in Lambertville for the rest of their lives. Abbott painted modernist still life and landscapes showing much of the influence of her husband. Her lengthy exhibition record includes the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Phillips Mill Community Association.
