    MECHANOTHERAPY AT VICHY

    Est: $900 - $1,500

Seven toned gelatin silver prints, ferrotoped, 7 5/8 x 9 5/8- inches, ca. 1903 by James Abbé. Abbé's Saint-Cloud reproduction stamp with French texts on the verso or on original labels, and other notations. Abbé.is best known for his Hollywood portraits, but early in his career he was a major photojournalist. "With the opening of the 'world's largest thermal spa' in 1903, Vichy adopted medical techniques to increase the effectiveness of its thermal treatments, giving rise to electrotherapy and mechanotherapy."[Website of " The Belle Époque in Vichy." These show various machines in use, including an arrangement for stereoscopic viewing. One of the captions likens the machines to medieval torture devices. Aside from documenting these medical innovations, the photographs suggest associations with the use of machine imagery as metaphors, sexual and otherwise, by Duchamp, Picabia, the Futurists, Kafka and many others. A wonderful book exploring this is Le Macchine Celibi/ The Bachelor Machines, Rizzoli, 1975. Just a few corner and edge cuts, but rich prints
