May Todd Aaron American, (1879-1967) Two Worlds oil on canvas signed lower center and verso. Exhibited: Contemporary Art Gallery, Inc. New York, 1947. Provenance: From a private collector in Zionsville / Indianapolis. From the Archives of AskArt: One of Oklahoma's prominent artists, May Aaron was a long-time resident of Pawhuska, where she married a physician and raised a family. In the mid 1920s, she resumed her art career and did numerous Native American genre* subjects, particularly the Osage tribe, as well as landscapes of her state. She was born in La Cellen and Gray Horse, Indian Territory, and her father was the government physician to the Osage in the 1890s. She took a correspondence course from a Chicago school and briefly studied at Wichita, Kansas. From 1900 to 1901, she attended the Chicago Art Institute* and then returned to Pawhuska where she opened a studio. However, she took time off to raise her family. Her husband died in 1950, and she traveled and lived in Chicago from 1957 to 1966, where she was active in the Art Institute Alumni Association. Her work can be found in the John H Vanderpoel Art Association and the historical societies of the Osage in Oklahoma.
