Alvar Aalto Sold at Auction Prices

Designer, Plastic Art, Painter, b. 1898 - d. 1976

Born in 1898, Finnish architect Alvar Aalto has become synonymous with the breakthrough in modern building and furniture design. Aalto began his education at the Helsinki Technical Institute while studying under the renowned Armas Lindgren. Upon graduating, Aalto began designing exhibitions and buildings across Europe, and eventually opened his own studio, becoming famous for his free-form architecture and experimentation with furniture and glassware. With an emphasis on personal expression and creative, irregular shapes, architect and glassware artist Alvar Aalto created pieces that feature flexible, dynamic forms and organic materials. Alvar Aalto vases for sale are among the artist's most highly coveted works, many of which were originally featured in the interior of buildings he was commissioned to design. Bring your home to life with modern glass vases for sale at Invaluable, and see how these small objects have the power to express energy and personality.

                        Est: €1,200 - €1,400

ALVAR AALTO (Finland, 1898 - 1976), by BD Ediciones. Pair of stools Model 60. Wood. Edited by BD in the 80's. Measurements: 43,5 x 35 x 35 cm. Pair of stools model 60 designed by the Finnish Alvar Aalto in 1933 and produced in the eighties by BD Ediciones from Barcelona. They consist of a circular plywood seat to which four bentwood legs are anchored. The legs are assembled directly to the seat, which greatly simplifies the structure and lends a singular elegance to the design, a hallmark of Aalto. Architect and designer, Alvar Aalto was part of the Modern Movement and participated in the CIAM (International Congress of Modern Architecture), founded in 1928 by Le Corbusier. He was the only architect of the Second Generation of the Modern Movement to be recognized as a "master", thus putting him on a par with Le Corbusier, Van der Rohe and Gropius, the great masters of the Movement's Heroic Period. In his honor, the Alvar Aalto Medal is awarded every five years in recognition of his contribution to creative architecture. Apart from his undeniable role in shaping the architecture of the twentieth century, Aalto left an indelible mark in the area of industrial design, with works such as his "Paimio" chair or his "Savoy" glasses. He is currently represented in the world's leading museums, such as the MoMA in New York.

ALVAR AALTO (Finland 1898 -1976) for IITTALA. Two "Savoy" vases. 1997. Glass. It presents a slight flaking on the side of the mouth of one of them. Measurements: 16 x 20,5 x 17 cm. The Savoy vase by Iittala is a classic of Nordic design.
