Circle of HANS VON AACHEN (Cologne, 1552 - Prague, 1615). "Christ at the tomb of two angels". Oil on oak panel. It presents faults and restorations on the pictorial surface and the board is warped. Measurements: 26 x 34,5 cm. In this work the theme of the lamentation of the body of Christ is expressed in a more intimate way than in previous periods, simplifying the composition and eliminating all possible elements. Thus, the body of the dead Christ articulates the image, located in the center, and behind him are two angels. In the present painting, the characters appear, cut out against a black background that enhances their volumes, only illuminated by two candles behind the face of Christ, so that the scene acquires an atmosphere of theatrical character, as well as revealing the interior of the cave and providing a greater spatial sensation to the scene. The bodies are modeled with an energetic brushstroke, selectively illuminated, a resource that undoubtedly contributes to accentuate the devotional and emotional message contained in the work. The author also manages to masterfully express both the physical pain, through the open wound in Christ's side and his sunken belly. The scene of the lamentation or weeping over the body of the dead Christ is part of the cycle of the Passion, and is interspersed between the Descent from the Cross and the Holy Burial. It is a very emotional theme, fruit of popular piety, which concentrates the attention on the drama of the Passion and the loving and mournful contemplation, with a realistic and moving sense. Hans von Aachen was one of the main representatives of northern mannerism. A versatile and productive artist, he worked in many genres. He was successful as a painter of princely and aristocratic portraits, and also painted religious, mythological and allegorical subjects. Known for his skill in depicting nudes, his eroticized mythological scenes especially pleased his main patron, Emperor Rudolf II, and remain the works for which he is best known. He also painted a series of genre pictures with small groups of figures shown from the chest up, laughing, often, it seems, using himself and his wife as models. Von Aachen tended to work on a small scale and many of his works are cabinet paintings on copper. Hans von Aachen's life and work are a unique testimony to the cultural transfer between northern, southern and central Europe in the late 16th and early 17th centuries After training in the tradition of Dutch Renaissance painting, the artist moved to Italy in 1574, where he remained for some 14 years, working mainly in Venice. In 1587 he returned to his native Germany, where he took up residence in Munich (Bavaria). His last years were spent in Prague. The combination of the Dutch realism of his training and the Italian influences acquired during his travels gave rise to his unique pictorial style. It presents faults and restorations on the pictorial surface and the panel is warped.

L'artista fu altresì responsabile delle collezioni reali e del famoso torso classico di Prassitele. Il dipinto in esame trova confronto con la Sacra Famiglia e angeli appartenente al Glasgow Museums Resource Centre (Cfr. J. Jacoby, Hans van Aachen, 1552-1615, Monaco, 2000) e a un disegno a penna e bistro conservato agli Uffizi, tradizionalmente attribuito a Nicola van der Heck.

Hans von Aachen (Colonia 1552 - Praga 1625) Adorazione dei pastori Tela incollata su tavola 56 x 42,5 cm L'opera, di rara qualità per l'eleganza con cui sono modellate le figure con l'uso del monocromo, riprende l'opera perduta giuntaci di Van Aachen conosciuta grazie a una incisione realizzata da Johann Sadeler il Vecchio. Questo prototipo del maestro tedesco, fu interpretato da altri artisti del tempo come Hendrick Goltzius a cui è attribuito il piccolo olio su rame della Galleria Sabauda di Torino, e l'olandese Gaspar Hovic, autore del dipinto conservato nella chiesa di San Bernardino a Molfetta. Pittore di nazionalità tedesca, il suo cognome deriva dal luogo di nascita del padre ed è conosciuto anche come Johann von Aachen, von Achen. Giovanissimo iniziò la sua attività pittorica copiando le opere di Bartholomeus Spranger. Poi fu in Italia, soggiornò a Venezia fra il 1574 ed il 1588 dove apprese il colorismo della scuola veneziana; probabilmente entrò in contatto con Tintoretto, artista che lasciò una traccia indelebile sul proseguo della sua produzione. Proseguì il suo viaggio di studio per Roma, dove apprese la lezione di Caravaggio e Michelangelo. Grazie alle sue eccezionali qualità, ben presto il suo nome iniziò a circolare tra le corti europee. L'elettore di Baviera e l'imperatore Rodolfo II d’Asburgo si avvalsero della sua arte. Since his childhood he showed great talent for painting. He worked as an apprentice for Jerrigh, a Flemish painter who had his studio in Cologne. He became a notable portrait painter, also painting religious and mythological subjects, some of which featured blatantly erotic scenes. Some of his works can be seen in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Around 1574 he visited Venice and Rome and was deeply impressed by the works of Tintoretto. Upon his return, he introduced mannerism to Germany. In 1592 he was appointed chamber painter to Emperor Rudolf II. In Italy he studied Michelangelo and the Mannerists. Painter of the aristocracy and courtier, his portraits are appreciated for their historical value. Aachen, Hans von. - Versuchung des Heiligen Antonius. Federzeichnung in schwarzbrauner Tinte, mit Grautönen laviert und mit Weiß gehöht, vermutlich aus dem Umkreis des Malers Hans von Aachen, rechts auf dem Sockel mit dem Monogramm "HvA". 30 x 19,3 cm. Deutschland um 1600. -- Die Heiligenlegende des Antonius bot Künstlern immer wieder die großartige Möglichkeit der Darstellung von Teufeln, Hexen und Monstern par excellence. Erinnert sei nur an die berühmteste Ausführung des Themas im Isenheimer Altar des Matthias Grünewald. -- -- Hier wird der Heilige, der seinen linken Arm auf einen steinernen Sockel gelegt hat, von zwei geflügelten Unholden brutal heimgesucht. Aus den groben, gedunsenen Gesichtern der muskulösen Teufeln wachsen ihnen geschwungene Teufelshörner, während sie mit den Krallen ihren Tatzen den erschrockenen Heiligen nach hinten zerren. Antonius' Blick wirkt ebenso erschrocken wie standhaft grimmig: mit seinem kahlen Kopf, seinem langen weißen Bart, dem in vielen Falten fallenden Gewand und den wehrlos gegen den Betrachter geöffneten Händen scheint er zu weichen und gleichzeitig der Versuchung zu widerstehen, die auch in Form einer Wildsau dargestellt ist, die im Profil von links in das Bild eindringt und eine weitere Bedrohung bedeutet. -- -- Unten an dem Sockel lehnt ein Totenschädel, rechts darüber erscheinen in einem Feld auf weißem Grund die ligierten Buchstaben "HvA" - wie es für den aus Köln stammenden Maler und Zeichner Hans von Aachen (1552-1615) charakteristisch ist, hier freilich in perspektivischer Verkürzung. Auch stilistisch würde das ungefähr passen, auch wenn die Zuschreibung unbedingt wissenschaftlich unterfüttert werden muss. – Das Blatt ist von höchster künstlerischer Qualität, jedoch in recht bedauernswertem Zustand und unbedingt restaurierungsbedürftig. So queren etwa zehn Wasserlauflinien und entsprechenden Flecken das Blatt. Hin und wieder mit Oberflächenberieb und Abschabungen von Tinte und Farbhöhung, gelegentliche winzige Randausbrüche bzw. kleine Einrisschen, unten noch ein ca. 12 mm breiter Papierrand außerhalb der Zeichung, ansonsten rundum bis zur Darstellung beschnitten und auf ein festes Stück Karton montiert. - Provenienz: Mainzer Privatbesitz.

Hans von Aachen oder Werkstatt, Urteil des Paris berühmte mythologischen Szene, nachdem die Göttin der Zwietracht Eris als einzige der olympischen Götter nicht zur Hochzeit des Peleus und der Thetis eingeladen wurde, warf sie einen goldenen Apfel mit der Aufschrift "Der Schönsten" in die Gesellschaft, worauf zwischen Aphrodite, Athene und der Gattin des Zeus Hera ein Streit entbrannte, welcher von ihnen der Apfel gebühre, Zeus entzog sich diplomatisch einer Entscheidung und übertrug dem schönen, jedoch vom Königshof verstoßenen und als Hirte lebenden Königssohn Paris die Beantwortung der Frage, Zeus beauftragt Hermes - hier rechts oben mit geflügelter Kappe und zaubermächtigem Hermesstab dargestellt - den Königssohn herbei zu schaffen, jede der drei spärlich bekleideten Göttinnen versuchte nun, Paris für sich zu gewinnen, Athene - hier links mit abgelegtem Helm und Schild - verspricht Weisheit, Hera - hier rechts dargestellt - verspricht Weltherrschaft und schließlich Aphrodite - hier mittig in Begleitung zweier Eroten dargestellt - versprich Paris die Liebe der schönsten Frau der Welt, hierfür entscheidet sich Paris und gibt ihr den Goldenen Apfel wie rechts im Vordergrund dargestellt - nicht wissend, dass die schönste Frau Helena bereits mit Menelaos von Sparta verheiratet ist - und löst damit die nächste Tragödie, den Trojanischen Krieg aus, links im Hintergrund spielen Quellnymphen und rechts im Vordergrund lagert ein Flussgott mit Spaten, die der griechischen Mythologie zufolge sich dem Willen Eros unterwarfen, das vorliegende Motiv schuf Hans von Aachen spiegelverkehrt, teils mit geringen Variationen, dazu erfuhr das Motiv breite Popularität durch die Kupferstiche von Raphael Sadeler von 1589, gering pastose, partiell lasierende Genremalerei, Öl auf Leinwand, unsigniert, Craquelure, doubliert, alte Retuschen, etwas restaurierungsbedürftig, gerahmt (bestoßen), Falzmaße ca. 49 x 63 cm. Künstlerinfo: wurde nach der Geburtsstadt seines Vaters "Aachen" genannt, auch Johann von Aachen, Jan van Achen, Aken, Janachen, Fanachen, Abak, Jean Dac und Aquano, van Acken, dt. Maler, Zeichner, Kupferstecher und Diplomat (1552 Köln bis 1615 Prag), Ausbildung zum Maler wohl beim flämischen Maler E. Äußerst fein erfasstes Gesicht, den Blick knapp am Betrachter vorbei gerichtet. Das Portrait ist sehr gut vergleichbar mit anderen Hans von Aachen zugeschriebenen Bildnissen. HANS VON AACHEN, att. a (Colonia 1552 - Praga 1615) CRISTO CROCIFISSO CON I DUE LADRONI Olio su tavola, cm. 50 x 64 PROVENIENZA Famiglia romana Il soggetto è conosciuto attraverso un disegno assegnato ad Hans Von Aachen, databile al 1587 e custodito al Getty Center di Los Angeles. Inoltre in riferimento a questo nostro esistono alcune opere tra cui un piccolo olio su rame, la cui composizione si riduce soltanto alla parte centrale, custodito al Kunsthistorisches Museum di Vienna, una versione attribuita ad un allievo, ubicata alla Narodni Galerie di Praga ed altre attribuite a seguaci del maestro sia esistenti sul mercato antiquario sia ubicate in collezioni private. La tavola in questione presenta la stessa costruzione ed impaginazione del disegno sopra citato, ma rispetto al foglio presenta sostanziali differenze. Fra queste la postura del Cristo, di San Giovanni e il gruppo centrale ai piedi della croce. Inoltre va sottolineato che la tavola, oggetto di studio, presenta particolari sostanzialmente differenti rispetto anche alle ulteriori versioni sia su rame, sia su tavola attribuite alla scuola ed ai seguaci CONDIZIONI DEL DIPINTO Felatura restaurata della tavola per linea orizzontale all'altezza del vello del Cristo. Hans von Aachen (Colonia 1552 - Praga 1625) cerchia-circle of "Orazione nell’orto dei Getsemani" Olio su tavola "Tha prayer in the Getsemani garden" Oil on panel 32 x 25 cm Pittore di nazionalità tedesca, il suo cognome deriva dal luogo di nascita del padre ed è conosciuto anche come Johann von Aachen, von Achen. Giovanissimo inizia la sua attività pittorica copiando le opere di Bartholomeus Spranger. Poi è in Italia, soggiorna a Venezia fra il 1574 ed il 1588 dove apprende il colorismo della scuola veneziana; probabilmente entra in contatto con Tintoretto, artista che lascia una traccia indelebile sul proseguo della sua produzione. Prosegue il suo viaggio di studio per Roma, dove apprende la lezione di Caravaggio e Michelangelo. Grazie alle sue eccezionali qualità ben presto il suo nome circola tra le corti europee. L'elettore di Baviera e l'imperatore Rodolfo II d’Asburgo si sono avvalsi della sua arte. L’opera, di cui esiste un prototipo autografo, è stata incisa da Egidius o Aegidius Sadaler anch’egli presente a Praga presso la Corte Rudolfina. Dal confronto con l’incisione vi sono delle importanti variazioni, prima di tutto l’aggiunta dell’angelo in alto a sinistra, poi dell’albero presente nel margine destro

BEWEINUNG CHRISTI Öl auf Eichenholz. Verso Parkettierklötze. 69 x 48 cm. Das Tafelgemälde in einem original Ädikularahmen mit Sprenggiebel und in den Gesimsen sowie in den seitlichen Lisenen vertieft eingesetzte Buntmarmorsteine. Die Szene vor nächtlichem schwarzen Hintergrund, von links oben durch einen Blitz aus den Wolken beleuchtet. Der Leichnam Christi wird mit aufrechtem Oberkörper von Engeln gehalten, das Haupt zur Seite geneigt, rechts Maria mit gefalteten Händen den Sohn betrauernd. Zwei Engel im Hintergrund halten je eine flammende Kerze. Am Boden die Dornenkrone. Das Inkarnat leicht bräunlich wiedergegeben, wodurch die textilen Farben, wie das weiße Tuch oder die in sich selbst leuchtende Rotfarbe des Engels links besonders zur Geltung gebracht werden. Bildaufbau, Figurengestaltung und insbesondere die Farbgebung verweisen auf den Manierismus, von Italien beeinflusst. Als stilistisches Merkmal sei hier ewähnt, dass im Werk des Hans von Aachen die leuchtende Rotfarbe des Gewandes, jeweils einer nahezu knienden Figur, in mehreren seiner Bilder Verwendung findet.
