Auctions brim with a variety of ammunition, particularly vintage offerings, limited runs, and other types that are no longer produced and hard to find on the commercial market. In addition to shotshells and rounds for firearm calibers in the standard .17 to .50-caliber range, shooting, hunting, and handloading enthusiasts will find custom wildcat cartridges in odd .10, .12, and .14 calibers specifically used for short-range varmint hunting and large .577, .585, .600, .700, and .729 calibers for taking down big game.

For example, a single .338 round autographed by former Navy SEAL and "American Sniper" author Chris Kyle sold at a 2013 charity auction in Texas for $24,000. On eBay in 2015, an upper tang with side plates and lifter for a rare Winchester 1866 rifle sold for $1,326, while an 1878 Sharps Borchardt Rifle's barrel, breech block, and lever sold for $960.
