Sparkling Wines

Bubbly champagne was originally considered a fault in the wines from the Champagne region in France due to its cold winter climates that prematurely ended the fermentation process. Champagne began to be appreciated by the nobility in Britain and France, gaining vast amounts of popularity when the Duke of Orleans expressed his preference for the sparkling variety in the court of Philippe II.

From storied houses in Champagne, France, to bargain bubblies from countries like Spain and Italy, where they might be referred to as Cava, Prosecco, Moscato d’Asti and Brut, a glass of sparkling wine has never gone out of style. While once reserved for special occasions, sparkling wine has becoming increasingly popular as a casual pairing for salty snacks including popcorn, nuts, and potato chips.

Inside the fascinating world of sparkling wines is an immense variety. A bottle of sparkling wine may be crafted from a number of grape varietals, resulting in pink hues, a dry profile, or other characteristics that set the wine apart from all the rest.
